Infernal Hordes are a great time, but the grind comes with a sneaky tax: your inventory. Between compasses, mats, and salvage, it's easy to go on autopilot. And if you're chasing faster rerolls or trying to keep your enchant budget healthy, Diablo 4 gold ends up feeling just as important as the loot itself. The problem is that one "quick" stop at the Occultist can undo an entire evening if you're not paying attention.
How the Occultist trap actually happens
You walk up thinking you'll tidy things up. Maybe convert a couple compasses, maybe clear a stack, maybe prep for a long run. Then the UI offers a bulk option, and your brain goes, "Yep, upgrade, sounds right." Click, confirm, done. Except it wasn't a couple. It was all of them. People have turned big piles of Bloodstained Compasses into Bloodsoaked in one misclick. That doesn't just change the label. It bumps the monster level and pushes the waves into a tier your build might not be ready for. If you were farming comfortably, you've just traded speed for pain.
Why losing the "right" tier costs more than keys
Each compass is time you already paid for. You earned it, you planned around it, and you probably tuned your setup for that exact difficulty. When you're forced upward too early, the run slows down. Deaths add up. You spend more time resetting and less time stacking Burning Aether. And that's the whole point of the mode: build Aether fast, open the chests, roll the dice on gear and Masterworking materials. If your clear time doubles, your rewards per hour crash. It's not dramatic, it's math, and it feels awful when you realise you did it to yourself.
Simple habits that stop the bleed
First, don't manage compasses when you're rushing between activities. Do it when you're calm, not when your party's waiting. Second, split stacks before you convert. It takes a second and it saves you from the "all-at-once" mistake. Third, read the confirmation box like it's trying to scam you, because it kinda is. Check the quantity, check the tier, then click. If you're experimenting with a new build, keep a small batch of lower-tier compasses in your stash so you can drop back down and keep farming instead of hitting a wall.
Getting back on track without burning out
If you already upgraded too far, don't brute-force it for hours out of stubbornness. Run what you can, regroup, and rebuild your supply the smart way: target the content you can clear cleanly, keep your gold flow steady, and only move up when it feels boring, not when it feels risky. And if you're trying to save time during a busy season, some players use marketplaces like U4gm to pick up currency or items so they can focus on actual runs instead of scrambling to recover from one bad click.
